All watches get affected by dirt and grit with age. The dirt and grit can make your valuable watch grind to a halt. Here’s what you can do.

We don’t realize it but our entire lives run on a schedule. You wake up according to a set time. You eat breakfast at a certain time. You set out for work at a certain time. And while at work you also refer to your wrist watch nearly a gazillion times to find out when you are going to get free to go back home! You see what I’m talking about. Your wrist watch has become an indispensable part of you life. we just cannot live without it and it goes everywhere we go!

But just imagine this. You do get dirty every day and you do take a bath every day to cleanse yourself and freshen up, but do you do that to your watch too? No we don’t. And that’s to be expected right? I mean, I’m not going to be scrubbing away at my Patek Philippe with water and soap! Not when I’ve shelled out a years salary to get it! But what I do is send it regularly to the watch maker for a cleaning and thorough scouring. Msot watchmakers may use emery sticks to get the outer casing in tip-top shape but with many pricey watch I insist that the watchmaker at the company use finely ground abrasive powder to get the grit out while still preserving its working.

Don’t get me wrong, I do like emery sticks for a good polish to me wristwatch but for the interior precision workings, I ask for abrasive powders like Abrasive Cleaner Garryflex Coarse Grain or fine grains. This block is great for delicate or hardy buffing, and general cleaning of almost all varieties of watches. The coarser blocks are used commonly for bracelet refurbishment with minute adjustments in the steel casing finishes. It can be used with water or petroleum jelly to control the filing action of the blocks. You can also ask your watchmaker to combine emery sticks with blocks for a more structured finish on your wrist watch.
