Handling any equipment does damage it a little bit. You have to be careful about the scratches that come up on even expensive watches. Such tiny scratches can accumulate to cause permanent and deep damage on expensive sapphire crystals that are extremely difficult to replace.
Every watch has a glass facing and casing that bears the brunt of daily life. Scratches, dents and faded polish are just a few things that routinely happen to every watch casing and strap no matter how well they work. You can either wait to send your watch to the watchmaker for servicing and get the scratches polished out or if you have the time and inclination you can do it yourself too.
For small dents in the casing and glass you can use
Cape Cod cloths, Multipurpose polishing cloths, Bergeon 5498 Silver Polish Cloth etc which are commonly used to polish silverware and brassware and
are found at every hardware store. Before you start polishing, just make sure that you have the dull or dual toned portions of your watch covered with masking tape. Over-zealous rubbing may just rub the coating off the dual toned parts of your watch.
Once you have isolated the areas to be polished start by rubbing gently. The cloths have chemicals impregnated in them and with use they grow black. Please be advised that the cloth is also scraping off the superficial layer of metal of your watch. Wet the polishing cloths if required and keep checking till the scratch is rubbed out. Rinse the watch out after rubbing to remove any residual chemicals which may give you allergic reactions. You can also use Selvyt cloths to rub out the deeper scratches in your watch casing. However, these cloths are measured to microns of varying degrees of abrasiveness.
Polishing pens are also around for just his purpose but you may find it difficult to handle these exactly. If you find that the scratch is not coming out then it’s a much better idea to hand it over to some one experienced and knowledgeable about watches to do the job for you
